A double suicide bombing at Islamabad’s International Islamic University on Tuesday killed up to seven people, including the two bombers. This is the first attack after the start of the military offensive against the Taliban in Waziristan.  Police chief Rana Akbar told
newsmen that apart from the seven dead, 29 persons were injured in the attack.

According to eyewitnesses, the first explosion took place at the university’s entrance door to the ladies cafeteria, while a second blast occurred at the administrative block.

Three deceased includes two female students, a male student and a staff member.

Among those injured, 24 are women and five are men, out of which four are critical, local police said.

The university campus, which is located near the Shah Faisal Mosque holds classes for bachelors and masters programs in Islamic Studies.

Thousands of students are taught here with a large fraction living on the campus. Many of the students at the university come from abroad.

The university may have come under attack, as senior staffers here have been critical of the Taliban’s activities, say observers. The university, which is run by the government, has distanced itself from the policies of the Tehreek-e-Taliban and observers say that is the possibly reason why it has been targeted.
