A petition signed by 10,000 residents of Leicester seeking justice for a British Sikh businessman killed in Punjab, India, has been handed over to House of Commons Speaker Michael Martin. Mohan Singh, 59, a Leicester-based textile factory owner and a respected member of the Sikh Asian
community, was reportedly killed in Punjab on August 18 this year. He was attacked by a gang on a street with metal bars.

His family and friends are devastated that his murderers are still on the run.

The petition was handed over to the speaker by Leicester East MP, Keith Vaz, who said he would travel to India to try to help with the investigation into the businessman's murder.

The petition demands, "the House of Commons work with the Indian government to help bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure that necessary measures are in place for British citizens to travel safely to India".

His family believes it was a contract killing and was linked to a business deal in which he was involved. Reports say that no one has been brought to justice for the killing yet.

His brother, Tirath Biring, a Conservative councillor, and other family members are urging the Indian authorities to arrest the killers.

Biring said: "People are very concerned about what happened to my brother and they, like us, want the killers brought to justice.

"Business people in Leicestershire are investing in India because they operate globally, but they are concerned about what happened to my brother and want to see that these kinds of crimes don't happen again."

Harminder Singh, a member of the staff at the local Guru Tegh Bahadur gurudwara, said: "He was a well-respected man in the community. His death is very sad and we must get justice."
