Twilight, the film about a girl who falls in love with a vampire, took 2.5 million pounds, beating animated comedy Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa into second place.
Seasonal comedy Four Christmases stayed in third place, while sci-fi remake The Day The Earth Stood Still starring Keanu Reeves, fell from top spot to fourth.
Animated adventure The Tale of Despereaux, featuring the voices of Dustin Hoffman, Matthew Broderick and Emma Watson, rounded off the top five.
