Congress workers in Varanasi today threatened to stop screening of Marathi movies and torched the effigy of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray in protest against the beating up of students of North India who appeared at railway recruitment examination in Mumbai.
They also held a public meeting where speakers urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil to take appropriate action to check such incidents.
They said that the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief would be given befitting reply for his such behaviour and added that the party workers would not allow the local cinema hall to screen the Marathi films.
Among those who spoke were youth Congress president Dayashankar Mishra, party corporator Vikas Chandra Tewari, Sharad Pandey and Arvind Mishra.
