Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday urged the Centre to provide maximum compensation to the family members of those who lost their lives in the stampede at the Kripalu Maharaj Ashram in Mangarh village of Pratapgarh district on Thursday. “Keeping in view the precarious
financial condition of the state, the central government should give compensation,” Mayawati said. “If the central government fails to give compensation then the state government would do so from its own resources,” she added.

“A high level inquiry had been instituted into the incident and effective action would be taken as soon as the report is received from the divisional commissioner,” she said.

Congress general secretary and Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi air-dashed to Allahabad and proceeded to Mangarh to meet family members of people who had died in the stampede.

He met the family members of those who had come from adjoining villages, Pratapgarh SP M.K. Misra said. Misra said almost all those who died belonged to 37 villages around Mangarh.
