A book that recently hit the shelves — The Don’t Diet Diet Cookbook — promises to help you do just that. Written by Suman Agarwal and Tinu Shanghvi, the premise of the
cookbook is that all diets today involve starvation, eating disgusting food and avoiding fats, milk or carbohydrates completely. Some are based on myths that certain food groups such as carbohydrates and proteins should not be mixed.

Instead this book advocates eating three tasty low-fat meals a day, each containing carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

According to the authors, avoiding fats is dangerous as it can lead to flaky skin, acne, muscle and joint problems and hormonal imbalances. They add that the average woman should never eat less than 1,200 calories a day and the average man 1,800; and that people should eat every three hours.

However, it is not all good news as the book advocates the complete avoidance of cakes, pastries, cold drinks, ice cream, paneer, and fried foods such as samosas and pani puri.

But the glossy hardback contains a range of western and Indian recipes such as Parsi Dhansak, Chana Dal Palak, and spinach and nutmeg soup, each with the number of calories and fats listed next to them. The instructions for making each are clear and easy to follow.

Pick up this book if you want to shed those extra kilos without subjecting yourself to the trauma of ‘popular’ diets.
