40 women constables to patrol city roads to take on criminals

After undergoing training in handling of firearms and riding two-wheelers, as many as 40 newly recruited women constables of the Punjab Police were deployed in the holy city on Thursday.

Armed with 9mm pistols each, these constables would patrol Amritsar in pairs on 15 Honda Activa scooters and five motorcycles.


These constables have been recruited with the aim of giving a sense of security to women and children. They would be patrolling areas sensitive to crime against women like busy market places and educational institutes.

as they joined duty on Thursday, these newly recruited women constables were seen positioned outside schools and colleges like BBK DAV College for Women, SR Government College for Women, Government Girls School, Sultanwind, Sri Guru Teg Bahadur College for Women, Jallianwala Bagh, Bharawan da Dhaba and District Shopping Complex, Ranjit Avenue etc.

“They were shown their locations of deployment on Wednesday and they have join duty from today. They will be deployed from 8am to 5pm daily at various important spots. The basic aim is to check eve-teasing and offer protection to women and children,” said inspector Harish Behl, incharge of PCR team.

Notably, the constables were trained in chasing and apprehending criminals. They were also familiarised with laws pertaining to crime against women.
