The American India Foundation (AIF) presented "Music for Social Change", a two-hour performance by students involved in the foundation's "Our family, our neighbourhood, our World (O3)" project. The performance was held on Saturday in the Art Gallery auditorium here. Among the students' 10 performances was Punjabi folk music, poetry and fusion songs exploring topics such as culture, identity and social issues.

In addition, the event highlighted the musical talent of Mandeep Sethi, a California-based hip-hop artiste and film maker who uses media to promote social change among youth communities in both India and the US.

Mandeep was one of two inaugural grantees of the AIF's Arts Innovation Fund, created to catalyse cultural inquiry and diversity and to create new approaches to problem-solving. The Fund, meant to mobilise the work of the O3 project, advances AIF's longstanding vision to build a lasting bridge of meaningful relationships and innovative approaches between the US and India.

Saturday's performances emerged from a five-day workshop facilitated by Mandeep, utilising his expertise of music and recording as a tool of expression to help students convey their stories.
