The Qila Lal Singh police have recovered the body of a young girl Amarjeet who went missing under mysterious circumstance on June 18, from the Lahore Uppar branch of Uppar Bari Doab Canal near Ranewala Guru Ka Bag village under Raja Sansi police station in Amritsar district.
The body, which was found floating in the water channel, had since been taken to the Batala civil hospital for post-mortem and her widowed mother Charanjeet Kaur had identified the body.
A resident of Jaito Sarja village under Ranger Nangal police station, Charanjeet had claimed that a policeman had committed the crime when she demanded the return of Rs. 1 lakh and 40-gm gold ornaments given to him for safekeeping two-and-a-half years back.
Talking to Hindustan Times at SSP office here on June 26, Charanjeet had said that she had two daughters and owed three acres of agricultural land. Policeman Gurdev Singh, who was posted at her village, conned her by promising that he would get one of her daughters a police job and took Rs. 1 lakh and gold ornaments from her around two-and-a-half years ago. Later, Gurdev was transferred to Amritsar but he neither got her daughter into the police nor returned her valuables, she alleged.
On June 18, the widow said, Gurdev called up her daughter Amarjeet to his village Saidpur to take back the valuables. She went to Gurdev's house but never returned, Charanjeet claimed. Later, Charanjeet alleged that she called up Gurdev Singh, who told her that he had accidentally killed Amarjeet and thrown her body in the Qila Lal Singh water channel.
On June 19, she approached Qila Lal Singh police and lodged a complaint but police did not act on her repeated requests. It was only after she approached senior police officials that Qila Lal Singh police registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC against Gurdev Singh on June 24.
