Former health minister and senior BJP leader Laxmi Kanta Chawla has sought to know from the Punjab government whether it controls the cable TV network operations in the state.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the firebrand leader posed this question after learning that cable operators had snapped the connections of a number of their subscribers as they had failed to install set-top boxes. Many of these subscribers have brought this to the notice of the former minister.

Chawla pointed out that cable operators had disconnected the services of subscribers in a number of localities in the city without warning. She said the people of these localities were unhappy and had approached her to know whether the connections were snapped on the instructions of the government.

"If the government has issued any such order to snap connections, it should withdraw the order and not force subscribers to install set-top boxes. If no order has been issued, the government should instruct the operators not to cut the connections of their subscribers," said Chawla.
