Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) general secretary Harminder Singh Gill has threatened to stage a dharna if Ranjit Singh Rana, the main accused in the ASI Ravinderpal Singh murder case, and his two associates are not shifted out of Patti immediately.

Rana, along with his associates Prabjit Singh Sandy and Dharamveer Dharma, are admitted in the civil hospital at Patti with fractured limbs. The three sustained injuries while trying to escape the police net near Sohal village on the intervening night of December 5 and 6.

"Their mere presence here is giving Patti a bad name. The town has come to the limelight for the wrong reasons. If the three are not shifted from here, Congress members will stage a dharna outside the civil hospital," he said in a statement issued on Saturday.

He advised the police to take them away to Chheharta, the place where the crime occurred. He claimed that many Patti residents had received phone calls from their relatives, particularly those settled abroad, asking if the criminals belonged to the town.

Gill said the cops should be aware of the gravity of the situation and shift them immediately. There were strong undercurrents of anger against the three and many residents had even talked about shooting the three in hospital, he claimed.

Gill also demanded that the public should be allowed to check the injuries that they had sustained. There were rumours in Patti that the three had not fractured any of their body parts and that their legs had been plastered only to keep them in hospital rather than in police lock-up, he alleged.
