The Amritsar city police have booked Jagtar Singh alias Sonu on charges of posing as a cop and abducting a woman belonging to Allowal village of Hoshiarpur, who had been betrothed to a Jalandhar-based man and had come to the city with her fiancé.
A case has been registered against him
under sections 365, 366 and 382, IPC at the E division police station. The police said the woman had managed to escape from the clutches of Jagtar, but the accused was yet to be arrested.

Inspector Sukhwinder Singh, SHO, E division police station, said the woman underwent a medical examination, the report of which is awaited. He said efforts were on to arrest the accused, who was absconding.

In his complaint to the police, the woman's fiancé, Parveen Kumar, a resident of Jalandhar, alleged that on March 3, he and his fiancée had come to Amritsar, and at about 8.30 pm, the accused accosted them near Phuwara Chowk. Jagtar told them that he was a police officer and showed them his identity card. He then asked them to come to the police station.

He made Parveen sit on his motorcycle and snatched his mobile phone near Mata Longan Wali temple.

He made Parveen stand there and told him that he would return with his fiancée. "Parveen said he saw Jagtar taking his fiancée towards Ghee Mandi in a rickshaw. The matter is being investigated," said the SHO.
