A day after the thumping victories of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates in the Amritsar municipal corporation (MC) polls, industries minister Anil Joshi asserted on Monday that people had made the right choice.

"In Amritsar North constituency, 13 out of 14 party candidates won," Joshi said. "This shows that not only was our choice of candidates right, but also that the people have chosen the right persons."

Joshi said the state party chief had made it clear that the mayors in Amritsar and Jalandhar would be from their party.

Thanking the party workers, the minister said, "It is our promise to the people of the holy city that that we will continue with the development agenda."

Asked why the sitting mayor Shwait Malik lost the election, Joshi said: "It is verdict of the people. People are very intelligent now and use their vote judiciously."

On a question as to whom he would support for the post of mayor, Joshi said: "It is up to the party high command to decide. Whatever decision is taken by the BJP, we will accept it."

In this poll, although the BJP has won 24 seats, there are a few councillors who are considered close to Joshi while some are with MP Navjot Singh Sidhu. However, Joshi denied there was any "groupism" among the party councillors.

BJP may take back expelled member

After the great show in the MC polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party seems to have softened its stand towards expelled party member and rebel councillor from ward number 9, Nitu Mahajan, and her husband Pappu Mahajan.

On Monday, Nitu and Pappu Mahajan shared the stage with industries minister Anil Joshi.

"When Congressmen can join our party, then why not these people," asked Joshi, alluding to Nitu and Pappu Mahajan. "They are part of the BJP and there is no harm in taking them back. The party high command will take a decision on this."
