The police stepped up security at various busy places across the city on Monday to prevent any untoward incident during the New Year celebrations.
About 800 policemen and two companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed in Amritsar. Amritsar police commissioner Ram
Singh said, "We are doing everything to ensure the safety of residents. We have deployed police personnel outside hotels holding New Year parties and other busy places across the city, especially Lawrence Road. The police are also randomly checking vehicles. The police force has been given instructions to ensure that tight security does not become a hurdle in the celebrations of residents."

The police also erected barricades to regulate the flow of traffic and conducted patrolling across the city.
