Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee member and senior Congress leader Raman Bahl, while addressing a meeting of Congress workers at Panchayat Bhawan here on Thursday, condemned the SAD-BJP government for imposing an "unreasonably high" property tax in the state.
"The way the government
has imposed property tax on small as well as big houses and business complexes is not acceptable to the people. This tax system will reduce house owners to tenants in their own houses. Why has property tax been imposed even on plots where the government has provided no civic amenity?" he asked.
Bahl said this tax would put an unbearable burden on the people, who were already reeling under inflation. He said that even the people who were below the poverty line would not be spared under the new tax system.
Bahl said PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa had already announced that the Congress would launch a stir to press the government to withdraw property tax. He said that under the guidance of Bajwa, he would lead a strong protest in Gurdaspur and villages falling in a radius of 5 km of the town against the proposed property tax.
