Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh called up Amritsar MP Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday morning in an attempt to pacify the "disgruntled and disillusioned" party leader.

Rajnath's call came a day after Punjab BJP chief Kamal Sharma said Sidhu was frustrated over not getting the post of the party's national general secretary. Sources said Rajnath assured the MP that his grievances would be redressed.

Sidhu's "political suffocation" was revealed recently in a Facebook post by his wife, BJP legislator Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu. With her husband keeping mum, she has been making scathing comments on his behalf, even saying that Sidhu is not going to contest the 2014 Lok Sabha polls "under the prevailing circumstances".

The former cricketer, a star campaigner for the BJP for the past several years, was apparently dejected after being ignored by the central and state party leadership.

The MP, who is in Mumbai for a TV assignment and has been missing from his constituency for the past several months, is likely to have a meeting soon with Rajnath in New Delhi, sources added.

In the past few years, Sidhu has had run-ins not only with party colleagues but also with leaders of alliance partner Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), especially cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia.

Talking to HT, BJP leader and former Amritsar Improvement Trust chairman Sanjeev Khanna said, "Sidhu is an asset to the party. I feel every BJP worker wants that the matter should be resolved and Sidhu must come back."

Punjab BJP Yuva Morcha chief Rajesh Honey, for whom Sidhu had been lobbying hard for the mayor's post, said, "Amritsar residents, too, feel that the controversy must end and Sidhu return to where he belongs."
