The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has taken strong exception to reports related to the head of a 'dera' in the Sindh province of Pakistan having shown 'disrespect' to the Sikh scripture, Guru Granth Sahib, at a gathering of his followers in his 'dera' recently.
A
release issued by the SGPC on Wednesday claimed that photographs of 'dera' head Shahi Narayan Bhajan, which were downloaded from internet, showed him sitting before Guru Granth Sahib with his head uncovered. This amounts to showing 'disrespect' as it is mandatory for all to cover their heads before the scripture.

SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar has asked the Pakistan government to register a case against the 'dera' head as per the law of that country. He said such acts can lead to communal tension and violence as these can hurt religious sentiments.

He appealed to the Pakistan government to take strict action to prevent recurrence of such incidents. Makkar also wanted the government to take steps to protect interests of Sikhs, who are a minority community.
