The 3-km stretch from Batala bus stand up to Model Town on National Highway 15 is giving drivers jitters owing to its poor condition. More than 10,000 vehicles cross through the stretch daily.
The road is in utter neglect with potholes at some places two-foot deep. The stretch tests the skills of drivers and commuters end up losing precious fuel and time. The municipal council, PWD and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) pass the buck and shy away from owning the responsibility of repair of the road.
The situation is going to worsen as the city is going to host the historical mela of Guru Nanak's wedding, popularly known as 'Baba Da Viah' on September 12, when lakhs of devotees drawn from all parts of the country, would traverse through this road.
The local municipal council hold public works department responsible for the upkeep of the road.
Sub-divisional officer (PWD) Mohar Singh, however said he had already brought the matter into the notice of NHAI officials.
He said that the condition of the road worsened after a sewerage line was laid in the area.
SDM (Batala) JS Grewal said that he had warned all the officials of municipal council, PWD and NHAI against turning a blind eye to the issue. He said that he had already brought is issue to the notice of Gurdaspur deputy commissioner Abhinav Trikha, who had convened a meeting of the concerned departments on Wednesday.
