Threatened repeatedly by the family of a woman who had eloped with his son a few days ago, Gurdev Singh, a man from Qadian, committed suicide on Thursday evening by consuming a poisonous substance.
On the statement of his wife, Rajbir Kaur, police registered a case on Friday against four members of the woman's family. Hardeep Singh, Charan Singh, Gagan Singh and Kinder are the accused. Gurdev Singh ran a tailor's shop at Sant Nagar locality in Qadian and his son, Lakhwinder Singh, was involved in a love affair with the daughter of neighbour Hardeep Singh. The woman's family objected to the relationship.
On September 12, Lakhwinder and his girlfriend left Qadian to participate in the Babe Da Viah (wedding anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev) religious ceremony at Batala but did not return. After waiting for an entire day, the woman's family started searching for her and found, later, that she had eloped.
Hardeep Singh and members of his family barged into Gurdev's house and threatened him with dire consequences. On Wednesday night again, Hardeep returned to Gurdev's house and threatened to abduct all women of his family, if they did not trace the runaway lovers.
Unable to bear the tension, Gurdev Singh inhaled a poisonous substance and died on way to hospital.
