Stressing that the US understood the security concerns of India, US foreign policy expert Walter Russel Mead stated here on Monday that the US and India were "natural allies" in fight against terrorism.

He was speaking at a special lecture on the US foreign policy organised by the department of political science at Khalsa College. He said many terrorist activities were being run from Pakistan's soil, where the security scenario was turning worrisome, as the state was turning weak against disruptive forces.

He said it was true that the true nature of threat from terrorism was realised by the US only after 9/11 but it did not mean that it was unaware of its destructive nature before. ``The 9/11 sent a clear message to us that no one was safe and we couldn't ignore terrorist activities anywhere. The US and India are natural allies in the fight against terrorism," he said.

He said both countries were worried that nuclear weapons in Pakistan might fall into the hands of terrorists, who might unleash a catastrophe. He advocated a strong and stable Pakistan, as a weak state would lead to more chaos, helping terrorists. "So bad is the security scenario in Pakistan that even military officers remove their army number plates while moving. They fear terrorists," he said.

Walter was honoured by principal Daljit Singh.
