The Congress' novel experiment of appointing zonal and regional presidents on 'franchise' was a desperate step to ensure that no more leaders desert the party and join the Shiromani Akali Dal. This was stated by revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia here on Thursday.
He claimed that
as many as five more Congress MLAs were desperate to join the SAD.

Lashing out at the Chandigarh Police for dragging its feet on registering an FIR against eight Congress MLAs under pressure from Centre, Majithia said that a delegation of Youth Akali Dal would submit a memorandum to Punjab governor and UT administrator, complaining about the inaction of Chandigarh Police.

Earlier, Majithia inaugurated a sports and cultural programme organised on the eve of martymdom day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium.

He said to promote sports in the state, the SAD-BJP government had constructed six hockey and eight multipurpose sports stadiums in the state with a cost of Rs. 150 crore, besides setting up 5,000 multipurpose gymnasiums and distributing 9,000 sports kits among the rural youth.

Chief parliamentary secretaries Virsa Singh Valtoha and Harmeet Singh Sandhu, Jaswinder Singh Sandhu, Rajinder Singh Chinna, Kartar Singh Chinna and Sukhpal Singh were also present.
