An attempt was made to steal cash from a nationalised bank branch and its automated teller machine (ATM) around Tuesday midnight at a village in Fazilka district.
The burglars first broke open the new ATM of the State Bank of India at Gobindgarh village in Abohar subdivision but it
was empty. Later, they broke the lock on the branch's shutter but before they could go ahead, they sensed some trouble, and fled.

There was no guard on duty on the Diwali night, when the incident occurred. AS Chahal, Fazilka's senior superintendent of police, confirmed the incident and said the surveillance camera footage might contain some clues. The police registered a case on the statement of branch manager Rajesh Juneja.
