Police have counter-booked five people under the Narcotic Drugs and psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and forgery for reportedly trying to implicate a man in a case of possession of drugs, on Saturday.

One Paramajit Singh, a resident of Ruknewala village, was booked in late August and an FIR registered against him on August 31 for possession of two bags of poppy husk, weighing 30 kg each. The crime was supposed to have occurred at the cremation ground.

Incidentally, the police team did not actually see the man , who left the bags, at the spot and sped away.

Paramjit's contention thus gains some weight and a police probe now has backed his version.
However, Paramjit claimed that the case was false and called it a conspiracy of people he had a land dispute with.

He approached local Congress MLA Parminder Singh Pinki, who held a press conference on Saturday. Pinki claimed that he got the top brass of the police to look into the case.

Ferozepur DSP (special cell) Gurbhej Singh conducted an inquiry and found that Paramjit was falsely implicated, allegedly by Iqbal Singh, Gubhej, Dimpy, Sukhwinder Singh and Kewal Singh because of a land dispute.

When contacted, DSP Gurbhej said that the main accused Gubhej had been arrested. The others would soon be arrested, he claimed.

The sellers of firecrackers in the city have ignored all the rules and warnings issued by the district administration. The administration had issued a circular on October 10 stating that the sale, purchase and bursting of crackers should be held in specified  areas only. The circular clearly highlighted the previous incidents of fire and accidents due to illegal storage of firecrackers. The administration has declared six locations across the district where the sale of firecrackers is permitted.
