Freedom fighter cremated with state honours

Jang Singh, a freedom fighter, was cremated with full state honours at his village Balahar Vinju of the district on Saturday.

Singh, born on December 18, 1923, had gone to Singapore in 1940 and was imprisoned in 1941 after Japanese captured the country.

In 1942, he got enrolled in Nehru brigade of Subhas Chandra Bose's Azad Hind Fauj. In 1945, he was sentenced to three-month jail in Barmah's Rangoon jail.

In 1946, he stayed behind bars for 10 months in Multan. His last rites were performed by his son Gurcharan Singh. Senior officer and political leaders were also present at the funeral.
