The Barnala police, on Monday, claimed to have arrested two persons, including the main accused, in the former Barnala MLA Malkeet Singh Keetu murder case about six months after the incident.
Keetu's nephew Jaspreet Singh, alias Jassa, and his accomplice Rashpal Singh were arrested from Dera Bassi, about 20 km from Chandigarh, after an exchange of fire between them and a special team of the Barnala police at around 2.30 pm.
Barnala SSP Snehdeep Sharma said that acting on a tip-off, the police team, in association with Dera Bassi cops, raided the hideout of Jaspreet, who was evading arrest since Keetu's murder.
"Both the accused started firing at the police, who returned the fire. One of the bullets hit Rachpal in the leg. He was nabbed the moment he fell down. The police overpowered Jaspreet as he tried to escape," said Sharma. He said they had been regularly getting inputs over the past few days regarding Jaspreet's presence in Dera Bassi.
Rachpal was admitted to a hospital in Dera Bassi. His condition was said to be stable.
The accused were handed over to the Moga police after their interrogation at the Dera Bassi police station.
The SSP said that besides being wanted by the Moga police, Jaspreet was facing charges under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC and the Arms Act at the Mehal Kalan and Rurke police stations, respectively, in Barnala district.
The police also claimed to have recovered a .32-bore pistol from Jaspreet's possession. Keetu, a two-time MLA from Barnala, was allegedly shot dead on October 29 last year outside his house in Bilaspur village of Moga district by his three nephews, Harpreet Singh, Gurpreet Singh and Jaspreet Singh.
The police had arrested Gurpreet and Harpreet from Badni Kalan and Bilaspur villages of Moga district on November 6 and November 21, respectively. Another co-accused in the case, Angrej Singh alias Kala, a resident of Deepgarh village of Barnala district, was arrested from a bus stop in Himmatpura village of Moga on April 7.
