The Punjab and Haryana high court has directed the state government to release Rs. 65 lakh for streamlining the sewerage system in Abohar, a sub-division of Fazilka. The court had also demanded the status report on the ongoing work to clear chocked sewerage system in Abohar on February 11.

Five municipal councillors of the Congress had filed a writ petition in the high court regarding the town's sewerage system, which is choked for the past several months.

In response to the petition, the high court, on January 13, ordered deputy director, local government, Ferozepur, to ensure cleanliness in Abohar, following which 11 teams of various municipal committees camped at Abohar. However, the sewerage system is yet to be made properly functional.

During the last hearing, justice Rajesh Bindal directed chief engineer, local government, to streamline the sewerage system and asked the Punjab government to facilitate required funds to provide better civic amenities besides potable water at Abohar. The court on Thursday asked the state government to release Rs. 65 lakh for Abohar and ensure that required funds are provided in near future for better civic amenities in the town.

Leader of Opposition and local MLA Sunil Jakhar has asked the senior MC authorities to ensure that Rs. 65 lakh is spent on streamlining the choked sewerage system of the town and not to spend the amount on other jobs as had allegedly been done in the past.
