Over intimidation of a rape victim by influential people, the Budhlada (reserve) legislator, Chittan Singh Smao, is under pressure to resign.
Protesting against heinous crimes by the powerful, the Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) on Wednesday demanded the Smao's resignation and a
first-information report against his son, Malkeet Singh, and a police official who is father of the prime suspect.

On December 8, the police had registered the case against Rajinder Singh Babbu, close relative of the Budhlada legislator and also son of assistant sub-inspector Jaspal Singh posted at Budhlada. On Wednesday, the PYC president, Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary; the district Youth Congress president, Gurpreet Singh; and party activists such as Bikram Singh Mofar visited the victim.

The rape case was registered after a month of the original complaint. The victim had also reported repeated blackmail and exploitation, and the making of dirty videos of the recurring crime. Prime suspect Babbu and two of his suspected accomplices are under arrest. The case under Sections 376 (rape), 420 (cheating), 313 (forced abortion), and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) is registered against Ranjit SIngh Babbu, Kiranjit Kaur, Prem Singh, Simranjit Singh, and Gursewsk Singh.

"It took the victim more than a month to lodge a rape case against a close relative of the Budhlada legislator, who is also charged with making shooting her dirty video," said Youth Congress leader Chaudhary. "The victim had claimed of intimidation by the legislator's son, and his father, ASI Jaspal Singh."

The constituency that is the scene of the crime belongs to member of parliament Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
