Forty-four lawyers filed their nomination papers for elections to 25 posts of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana on the first day of the process on Saturday. The next date of filing nominations is April 22.
Elections to the legal body with 58,696 advocates spread across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh are scheduled in two phases on May 31 (in Chandigarh) and June 1 (in Punjab and Haryana). April 29 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations papers. Justice NK Agrawal (retd) is the returning officer.
Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association (HCBA) president Anmol Rattan Singh Sidhu, who has been chairman of the bar council earlier, and his unsuccessful opponent in the recently held HCBA elections, Harpreet Singh Brar (Rajan), filed their nominations on Saturday. Former council chairmen Lekh Raj Sharma, Gurinder Pal Singh and Chander Mohan Munjal also filed their nominations.
Earlier, the bar council elections were to be conducted on December 21 and 22, 2012, as the five-year term of the body was to end on January 8, 2013. But due to pending litigations in the high court and the Bar Council of India, the elections were delayed. One of the main issues of litigation, preparation of electoral rolls of all advocates with photo identity cards, remains unresolved.
The Bar Council's strength is of 25 elected members excluding two ex-officio members as advocate generals of Punjab and Haryana, Ashok Aggarwal and Hawa Singh Hooda, respectively. At present, Minderjeet Yadav, Inder Pal Singh Dhanna and Harpreet Singh Garcha are chairman, vice-chairman and secretary of the body, respectively.
