Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday appointed Ravneet Singh Bittu, party MP from Anandpur Sahib, as the whip of the Congress parliamentary party in the Lok Sabha.
Soon after receiving a letter to this effect from union minister for parliamentary affairs and urban development Kamal Nath, Bittu met Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi and thanked the party leadership for reposing faith in him by according him a new responsibility.
Later, Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa, besides other senior parliamentarians from Punjab, congratulated Bittu.
Sources close to the Congress leadership reasoned that Bittu, a first-time member of Parliament, had been actively drawing the Centre's attention towards key issues concerning Punjab.
Taking all allies along, the Congress-led UPA government is trying hard to pass a majority of the pending bills during the ongoing monsoon session. Bittu has been entrusted with the task of ensuring the attendance of party MPs from Punjab.
