A Punjab police assistant sub-inspector Bhupinder Singh was arrested by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths on Tuesday evening on charge of accepting a bribe from the owner of an immigration firm in Sector 42 here. CBI sources said that the ASI, posted with Jalandhar police, had
been calling up Healthyway Immigration firm director Amit Kakkar since the beginning of January this year, and allegedly demanding Rs. 50,000. The ASI informed Kakkar that a complaint against him for not sending an applicant abroad even after taking Rs. 25,000 was pending in Jalandhar. The ASI allegedly demanded Rs. 50,000 from Kakkar in lieu of dismissing the complaint and not converting it into an FIR.

CBI sources alleged that Bhupinder Singh had already received Rs. 25,000 from Kakkar earlier on. The police official allegedly continued to call up Kakkar and blackmail him.

The ASI arrived in Chandigarh on Tuesday morning and phoned up Kakkar to demand more money. Kakkar forwarded a complaint to the CBI on Tuesday morning, following which a trap was laid.

The ASI was called by Kakkar to his immigration office in Sector 42 at 5pm. Kakkar gave marked currency notes provided by the CBI sleuths to the ASI. As the ASI accepted Rs. 45,000, the CBI personnel caught him.

Talking to media, Kakkar said, “The ASI called me up and said that there was a complaint against the company and he would sort it out if he was paid Rs. 45,000. I informed the CBI and a trap was laid following my complaint.”

In 2011, the CBI had nabbed Punjab police deputy superintendent of police Raka Ghirra. The same year, Punjab additional inspector general (internal vigilance) Paramdeep Singh Sandhu was also arrested by the central agency.
