The district (rural) police claimed to have busted an international gang of drug smugglers with the recovery of 1.5-kg of cocaine and arrest of an African-Canadian national. The contraband is valued at Rs. 15 crore in the international market.

After getting a tip-off, a special police team led by superintendent of police (SP) Rajinder Singh intercepted a Ford Endeavour (PB-65D 7080), which was parked near Kadhola Guru village, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Yurinder Singh Hayer said.

The person sitting in the vehicle was identified as John Mensah, an African-Canadian citizen. When the vehicle was searched, 1.5-kg of cocaine was seized, which was concealed under the driver's seat.

John, who originally hails from Ghana, was immediately arrested, but his accomplice identified as Satnam Singh, a Canada-based non-resident Indian, managed to give police the slip, the SSP said. During preliminary interrogation, John revealed that he smuggled the cocaine from Canada.

When asked about the possibility of connivance of airport officials, the SSP said that all facts would be clear during investigations.

"Even the destination of the contraband is yet to be identified, which will be possible only after the arrest of absconding NRI Satnam Singh," the SSP added.

The accused would be produced before the court and the police would seek his police remand for interrogation.
