Police have rounded up two migrant labourers after a Class 7 student of a government school at Gahlari and a resident of Hasanpur village in the district was allegedly raped and killed by unidentified suspects on Wednesday evening.
Sources close to her family on Thursday said the girl
had gone to fields to answer nature’s call at about 4.30pm.

When she did not return after few hours, parents started looking for her.

During the search, they arrived at a field in the village and found the girl’s naked body.

The alleged killer had strangled her to death using her ‘pyajami’ (a tightly fitted lower dress) and  her mouth was also stuffed with a cloth.

The girl’s family claimed that she had been raped and killed by a migrant labourer who was seen by villagers coming from the side where she was later found dead.

Fearing that the police would not act promptly in the case, the relatives of the victim held a dharna and blocked traffic at the Post Office Chowk on the GT Road in Gurdaspur. They lifted the dharna after police assured them of action.

The post mortem of the victim was conducted at the civil hospital in Gurdaspur. When contacted, senior medical officer Dr Sudhir said a sample had been sent to the laboratory for examination to determine if the girl was raped.

Meanwhile, the body was cremated in the presence of her relatives, family friends and superintendent of police (headquarters) Jaspal Singh. The Dorangla police have registered a case.
