The Congress on Monday demanded governor's rule in Punjab, during the Lok Sabha Session, following alleged murder of a police officer in broad daylight in Amritsar by an Akali Dal leader. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Ravneet Singh (Cong) said the incident showed that girls and
women were not safe in Punjab as the police officer was murdered in broad daylight for stopping miscreants from teasing his daughter.

Supported by his party colleagues, Singh said the police force has been thoroughly politicised in Punjab with police stations becoming "dens" of Akali Dal.

"Rapes and firings were the order of the day and the law and order situation was very bad," he said amid strong protests by Akali Dal members.

He sought police reforms in the state and intervention of the central government through the imposition of President's Rule.
