Punjab Congress on Saturday accused chief minister Parkash Singh Badal of "shielding and protecting" education minister Sikander Singh Maluka despite one after the other scam surfacing in the education department.

In an exclusive report on Saturday, Hindustan Times highlighted how 53 people who didn't even apply for the post of physical training instructor (PTI) in government schools were selected "on merit" in July-August 2012 by the secondary education departmental selection committee, chaired by director, public instruction (DPI), secondary education, Kamal Garg.

In a press statement, the Congress spokesperson said, "The Congress is of the firm opinion that the said recruitment scam is part of the larger methodology, mechanism and modus operandi adopted by (education minister Sikander Singh) Maluka."

Demanding an inquiry into the scam, the Congress said, "If a fair and impartial inquiry is conducted into all 849 PTI teachers selected by the government in 2012, many more skeletons would surface."

The Congress alleged that most of the selected candidates "either belong to the Chief Minister's area or the constituency of Maluka".

The opposition party said Maluka had now conveniently acknowledged the fake recruitment and promised to sack all those appointed unfairly despite the fact that the aggrieved and deserving candidates had been holding dharnas and protests outside Maluka's house in Bathinda and Chandigarh over the past one year.
