Speaking with the media, Manjit Singh GK said he would follow his father, late Jathedar Santokh Singh, who in 1964, had taken a step for the promotion of Punjabi language under the banner of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) of ensuring that road signs were in Punjabi as well apart from Hindi and Urdu.

"Consequently, Punjabi Academy was formed in 1980 and Punjabi received the second-language status in Delhi in 2001," said GK.
