Driver's daughter bags US varsity scholarship

Poonam Dhull, daughter of a driver in the Haryana public relations department, has bagged a scholarship of $50,000 (Rs 30.5 lakh) for pursuing PhD in chemistry from the University of South Carolina, US.

She is a native of Bhana village in Kaithal district and, at present, staying in Sector 11 B here. Poonam, 24, completed Class12 from OS DAV Senior Secondary School, Kaithal, and did B Sc (medical) and M Sc (chemistry) from Panjab University here.

She pursued research under the supervision of Prof P Venugopalan, who guided her on a project titled 'Structure activity relationships in fluorohydrins and their derivatives: a structural investigation'.

She credits her father Suresh Pal and mother Sheela Devi with providing congenial environment to study. "My parents never let me and my younger brother and sister feel any kind of financial insufficiency. They always boost our morale," Poonam told HT. She is thankful to her school teachers in Kaithal for her sound foundation in the subject.

Suresh said he felt proud of his children and credited his wife, who, at best, can read newspaper, with encouraging her children to study with determination.

Chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda congratulated the girl and expressed hope that she would excel in academics and bring laurels to the state.
