High-velocity storm leaves major part of city powerless for several hours

High velocity windstorm that lashed the city on Sunday evening, damaged the power distribution system as a result of which major part of the city was left without power supply for over several hours.

According to officials, power supply remained disrupted for more than 24 hours in many sectors and could be restored in the evening after desperate efforts put in by the staff of electricity department.

According to an official of electricity department, supply remained disrupted in parts of Sector 18, 19, 20, 21, 27, 28, 30, 37, 38, 39, 40, 46, 51, 52, 53 among others areas.

The department is said to have faced heavy losses as more than 40 electricity polls were damaged in different parts of the city.

Talking to HT, UT superintending engineer MP Singh said that they managed to restored power in sectors where only power cables had snapped. However, it took us considerable time to restore supply where polls were damaged.

He further claimed that the staff worked overtime to restore power supply.

During last 24 hours, the electricity department had received more than 1, 300 complaints from various parts, highlighting the power situation in the city. In daily routine in summers, the department receives around 300 complaints.

Due to power outage in various parts of the city, the traffic signals were also not functional leading to chaos on the roads.
