Punjab health and family welfare minister Surjit Kumar Jyani stated that the government would not tolerate adulteration in food items.
During the ongoing festive season, the department has initiated a massive drive on Jyani's orders, against adulterators across the state and anybody found guilty of contaminating sweets would not be spared.
Jyani was addressing a gathering at Lalru Mandi during a function organised by Bharatiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha on Wednesday.
He said profit earners by playing with the health of people would not be tolerated.
Jyani said women had been given equal status and rights in the constitution but their exploitation could not be stopped till date as they had been victimised by several social evils such as female foeticide and dowry system.
Those present on this occasion also included Mahila Morcha state president Renu Thapar, secretary Seema Sharma and SAS Nagar district president Ekta Nagpal.
Earlier, Jyani visited the civil hospitals in Dera Bassi and Lalru. In an effort to check the spread of HIV/AIDS, the minister also inaugurated the ICTC (Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre) in Lalru hospital.
Civil surgeon Dr Rajiv Bhalla said that anybody could walk in the centre for a free test and the information would be kept secret.
Those present at this function also included Lalru SMO Dr Daler Multani, Dr HS Cheema and Bhupinder Dahri.
