Three policemen punished for their "inability" to handle the infamous Khushpreet Singh kidnapping and murder case that took place in December 2010 may get a second chance to straighten their service record.

UT home secretary Anil Kumar, in an order dated February 18, has asked inspector
general of police (IGP) RP Upadhayaya to "re-look" into the magisterial inquiry, which had found lapses in the conduct of then Sector 34 police station house officer (SHO) inspector Udaypal Singh, then Burail police post in-charge inspector Narinder Singh and sub-inspector Balraj Singh.

The home secretary said there were flaws in the magisterial inquiry conducted by PCS officer ML Sharma. He said that the punishment awarded to the three was disproportionate.

The home secretary has, if required, now asked for an independent inquiry by another officer to give an opportunity to the cops to present their side of the story.
