Monday for killing his wife Manjeet Kaur on February 17.
A case was registered on February 18 on the complaint of the victim's mother, Shanti Devi, a resident of Kishanpura village, Zirakpur. Shanti Devi alleged that her daughter, Manjeet Kaur, was married to Amarinder Singh, a resident of Chotti Perch village in Mullanpur on November 28, 2012.
A few days into the marriage, Amarinder Singh sent Manjeet Kaur back to her parents' home at Zirakrpur, Shanti Devi alleged, adding that her daughter told her that Amarinder Singh used to beat her up regularly. She further alleged that her daughter was killed by Amarinder Singh who had illicit relations with his sister-in-law.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said, “Amarinder Singh has confessed to murdering his wife by strangulating her. He had planned the murder meticulously and tried to pass it off as an accident.”
Bhullar added that as per the plan, the accused, on the February-17 afternoon, took his wife to a religious place. “At an isolated place, he strangulated Manjeet Kaur with her 'dupatta'.
When Manjeet Kaur tried to raise alarm he hit on her head with a stone,” the SSP said.
“After murdering Manjeet Kaur, to pass off the murder as an accident, he put the body on his scooter and wrapped her 'dupatta' around the wheel of the scooter to give the impression that she died due to strangulation after her 'dupatta' got stuck in the wheel. Amarinder Singh had claimed that she suffered a head injury as she fell off the scooter after her 'dupatta' was caught in the wheel,” said Bhullar.
'Did not like her, so killed her'
Even as the victim's mother alleged that it was due to an illicit relationship that Amarinder killed his wife, the accused denied having relations with any other woman. “I killed her because I did not like her and never wanted to marry her,” Amarinder Singh told police. He added that he was pressured into marrying Manjeet Kaur against his wishes and wanted to get rid of her.
“I had even sent her back to her parents' home but she came back. To get rid of her, I decided to kill her,” the accused told police.
Mother's suspicion turned out true
Shanti Devi, at the very first instance, had declined to accept the accused's version that Manjeet Kaur had died in an accident. Shanti Devi had told police that on February 17, her daughter had called her up and said Amarinder Singh used to beat her up mercilessly. In the afternoon, Shanti Devi was told over phone that her daughter had died in an accident.
It was on Shanti Devi's suspicion that police had booked Amarinder Singh for murder and started investigation.
