To provide better facilities to girl students residing in hostels of government schools and colleges, the Sirsa district administration has ordered the installation of sanitary napkin vending machines.

The machines have already been installed at the district degree college hostel, ITI girls' hostel, polytechnic hostel and university girls' hostel, under the Backwards Regions Grant Fund (BRGF) Scheme. And will be installed in girls' senior secondary schools at a later stage.

A facility for discarding the used napkins has also been provided at places where the machine is available, Sirsa deputy commissioner J Ganesan said, adding that the students for using the machine would have to insert a coin for a napkin.

An administration official said the idea of installing the machine also arose because of used napkins found near girls' hostels.

"If discarded without care, it can to the spread of diseases among stray animals," the official added. Educational institutes, meanwhile, have welcomed the idea.
