ORIYAS IN TRICITY
The city has not lent any helping hand to the hands that built the City Beautiful. All landmark buildings in the city have Oriya connection. A majority of them were built by contractors hailing from Orissa, now Odisha, but sadly these people, who have made Chandigarh their home, neither have a direct train to their home state nor has the UT administration bothered to build any bhawan for them.
The tricity has a population of 1.5 lakh Oriyas, many of whom came here in 1955 to work as construction contractors. Most of the buildings, including Panjab University (PU), Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Kisan Bhawan, Secretariat and several others, were built by them only. Today, most of these people are fluent in Hindi as well as Punjabi.
At present, some of them are professors at PU, doctors at PGIMER and other health institutions of the central or state governments and private health centres in the tricity. The community is imbibed well with the culture here and have started marrying north Indians.
Jagannath Malik, a 60-year-old Oriya, says, "We have grown with Chandigarh as my grandfather Dharnidhar Malik came here in 1955 and constructed most of the government buildings in the city. I came to the city in 1973 and today, I have my own house in Sector 47. My children studied in the city and are now married and well-settled."
In 1980, Oriyas established an organisation namely 'Utkal Sanskrutik Sangh' and constructed a beautiful Lord Shri Jagannath temple in Sector 31-D, Chandigarh.
KS Nayak, 65, who came to Chandigarh in 1970, says, "The contribution of our community in building the city is immense, but we got nothing in return from the UT administration. Our demands of direct train and land for a bhawan for the past 33 years have not been met. We celebrate all festivals and love the culture of our Chandigarh."
"Despite efforts made by these people for the past 58 years, the local administration has not allotted any place for constructing Odisha Bhawan. Even there is no direct train from Chandigarh to Odisha due to which we face a lot of difficulties in travelling to our native places. We feel, Chandigarh is the only place where people of all communities respect each other," says Manoj Kumar Mahapatra, executive member, Utkal Sanskruti Sangh, who married a woman from Haryana.

Raw papaya: 200gm

Salt: as per taste
* Soak arhar dal in water for about 1 hour. Wash all vegetables thoroughly; cut them into medium size pieces, cut beans and drumstick into 2-inch long pieces. Cut thin slices of onion.
* Fry cumin seeds (3 tsp) and dry chilli (2 pcs) slightly, then make a fine powder out of it, keep aside.
* Boil 6-7 cups of water in a deep pan. Add the dal, turmeric powder (1 tsp) and cook it. When half cooked, add all vegetables to it. Add salt.
* When the vegetables are half cooked, add tomato pieces. Continue cooking till everything is well cooked. Remove from flame and keep aside.
* Heat oil in a deep pan. When hot, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, bay leaf and dry chilli. When splutter add onion slices and cook till they turn golden brown.
*Add the boiled dal and vegetable mixture to it slowly. Cover it. Finally, sprinkle the cumin-chilli powder on it. Remove from flame and serve hot with rice or roti.
