Acting tough on defaulters, the district police have started issuing challans on vehicles plying without high security number plates.

District transport officer Karan Singh on Saturday said that all vehicles (from series 1 to 2000) entering the district were given a deadline (March 31) to have high security number plates, after which it was told that any such vehicle would be challaned.

He said the district ranked third in state in terms of collecting revenue through fines and taxes imposed on defaulters and added that Rs. 22 crore was collected in the last fiscal, which was more than the allotted target.

When questioned about school buses plying without fulfilling court guidelines, he said buses ferrying students more than their capacity and those plying without valid permit were also being challaned.

He said more than 100 tourist buses especially those plying at night and violating norms were also being challaned adding that 39 such buses were challaned and a fine of Rs. 54,000 was slapped on them.

Not only buses, autos ferrying more passengers than the actual seating capacity were also being challaned, he further added.

He said the auction for fancy number series PB 65 U would be held in Phase 1 on May 9 and the last date to submit forms in this regard was May 7 till 5pm.
