Though the Sector-42 day market invited the wrath of the administration as several enclosures that had been made permanent by erecting walls were razed down, other such markets and the illegal structures therein have not attracted attention.
Under the rehabilitation scheme for owners of 'rehri', the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) has constructed day markets in various sectors -- 7, 9, 11, 15, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 37, 38, 39, 41, 42, 43, 46 and 47.
As per allotment conditions, spaces were allotted to roadside vendors to carry out business only by the daytime and no permanent structures could be raised at the allotted spaces.
According to officials, spaces in the Sector-42 market were allotted around four months ago and some of the vendors flouted the terms and conditions of the allotment by raising walled enclosures.
However, similar violations in the other older markets have existed for the past many years, but no action has been taken.
UT assistant estate officer (AEO) Rahul Gupta said the day market in Sector 42 had been recently setup and there were no legal hurdles in razing the illegal enclosures. However, similar markets in other parts of the city were old and they would have to look into legal aspects and follow a certain procedure before initiating action.
Allottees to move court
After getting a verbal warning from the estate office over illegal structures, the allottees of the Sector-43 day market have decided to move the court.
A total of 60 shops were allotted in the market in 2004. Out of this, as many as 35 allottees have raised illegal enclosures.
Ram Shukla, who owns a shop in the market, said that shop-owners were uprooted from Attawa in 1986, with the promise of relocating them in other parts of the city. After a long battle with the authorities, shop-owners were given spaces in 2004, and their allotment letter stated that they would be given constructed booths. However, they were only handed a space, sans any structure.
“We were cheated by the administration. After waiting for nearly 18 years, we were allotted spaces, which were not fit for doing business. We had no option, but to raise structures around our shops. We will move the court to ensure that authorities do not demolish our shops,” said Shukla.
