The girl's body was recovered from the nearby forest area three days after the crime was committed. The accused, Shankar Chaudhry, was also arrested on Wednesday.

The accused was not only a neighbour, but was also engaged as daily wager with the girl's father Jagpal Singh.

Chaudhry is married and has six children. The incident took place on November 25 when the accused returned home around 7 pm under the influence of liquor.

The girl was playing outside her house with her three sisters. Chaudhry lured the victim on the pretext of getting her groundnuts and took her to the nearby forests situated on the Kheri Gujjran road, where he committed the crime. Later, he allegedly strangled the girl to death.

When the girl's family asked Chaudhry about the girl, he denied that the girl had gone with him and later absconded.

Chaudhry hails from Bihar and used to reside adjacent to Jagpal Singh's accommodation with his younger brother Virender. Both brothers were engaged as labourers with Jagpal. The girl's grandfather alleged that Chaudhry took the girl along with him to get her groundnuts, but he returned without her.

Unable to find the girl, her father registered a missing complaint with the police.

Gurdial Singh, SHO, said the police had already registered a case under Section 364 of the IPC against Chaudhary and on Wednesday morning, they arrested him.

The police recovered the girl's body after Chaudhary confessed that he had hidden the body in the forest. The body bore marks of strangulation.

The police have shifted the body to the Dera Bassi civil hospital. The SHO said after the recovery of the body, the police had also added sections of rape and murder under 376 and 302 of the IPC, respectively, in the FIR.
