To improve patrolling and efficiency, Chandigarh Police are going to start the process to recruit 758 men and women for the posts of constable and assistant sub-inspector within a month.
UT inspector general of police (IGP) RP Upadhyaya cited increased police activities for the plan. "Our activities have increased manifold over the past couple of years. More cops are needed for law and order, VVIP security, managing the situation at rallies and protests, and watch criminal activities in the city."
The development gains significance as there are 6,721 sanctioned posts in the force, of these 5,963 are already filled. More personnel would help the force improve patrolling in the city.
The 758 personnel will be recruited as part of the first phase of the force's recruitment drive. Later, in the second phase, the police will recruit another 800. For the second phase of recruitment, UT police are awaiting an approval by the union ministry of home affairs.
Police will only recruit constables and ASIs. They plan to fill the vacant posts of 93 head constables and 25 sub-inspectors through promotions.
As of now, unsanctioned wings of the force - including economic offences, women's cell, police control room, dog squad and certain others - require more staff. With the induction of more cops, the requirement for these units will be filled.
A 2007-2008 Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR$ND) study regarding requirement of manpower in Chandigarh Police had stated that there was a need for 2,500 more cops.
In the first phase about 1600 cops were to be inducted in year 2009-2010.

To get recruited in the police, candidates have to qualify a 1600-metre race, long jump, high jump and pass physical measurements. After this, the selected candidates will have to sit for a written test and then face an interview.
