Two youths, who were accused of rape by a Dalit woman, committed suicide by jumping before a train at Kanheli village in the district in the wee hours of Friday.
The deceased were identified as village residents Sandeep Kumar and Sunil Kumar, both in their early 20s and belonging to
the Jat community.
A 30-year-old woman from Ajaib village under Meham town had alleged that four persons, including the duo, had raped her on Wednesday night.
In her complaint to the police, the woman had said that she was sleeping with her four children when Samunder Jogi (her husband's cousin) and three others barged into her house and raped her. She said her husband, a trucker, was not at home when the incident occurred. On the basis of the complaint, the Meham police had booked the youths.
Sandeep and Sunil took the extreme step around 2am on Friday. The government railway police took possession of their bodies and contacted their family members from a mobile phone recovered from the spot.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested one of the suspects, Samunder Jogi, 25. Police sources said the woman had talked to the suspects on the phone for a long duration on Wednesday night before they came to her house. Sources added that she had denied talking to the suspects before the incident, but the call records belied her claim.
Family members of the deceased told mediapersons that the youths were innocent and the woman had tried to frame them.
Rohtak superintendent of police (SP) Vivek Sharma said, "The woman's statement has been recorded and she has been taken for a medical examination."
