5,000 middle pass youth to get free hospitality training: minister

To meet the growing demand of hospitality, tourism and travel industry for professionally trained manpower and to render specialised training to students and professionals in tourism and hospitality related subjects, the Punjab government has envisaged programmes to create programmes for promotion of knowledge and to foster opportunities for learning, especially for the youth.

Tourism and cultural affairs minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur said that in recognition of the state's achievements in the tourism and hospitality sector, the central government has conferred the  National Award for Excellence in Hospitality Education for 2011-12 to the Chandigarh College of Hotel Management based at Landran.

The minister said that "Hunar Se Rozgar Tak" programme, a pro-poor scheme, was launched to create employable skills in  the youth, especially in the fields of food production, front office and bakery.

The youth with a minimum qualification of Class 8 and are between 18-28 years are eligible. "Trainees are provided free training material, uniform, tool kit and free meals, along with a stipend of Rs 2,000. As many as 900 students were trained under the project in  2011-2012. Another batch of 1800 students will be provided training in the year 2012-2013," he said.

The government would also make efforts for employment of these trained professionals, said Phillaur.

"Under a well-defined policy to train and employ youth of the state, these training programmes have been framed in basic fitness, spa, video recording, conservation of heritage buildings and other related fields and Rs 5 crore have been earmarked for training over one year. Once this programme is implemented, as many as 5,000 trained professionals will be available every year under central government funded scheme," he said.

He claimed that free training is being provided through "A" class hotels in Punjab to hotel staff, he added.
