The Punjab Congress has accused deputy chief minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal of adopting double standards on foreign direct investment (FDI).
State Congress legal cell co-chairman Jaiveer Shergill, in a press statement issued here, said SAD MPs
were camping in New Delhi to oppose FDI in the retail sector, even as Sukhbir had inaugurated a Metro Cash and Carry store in Amritsar on Monday and termed FDI in the wholesale sector 'pro-farmer'.

Shergill said Sukhbir had conveniently forgotten that FDI in retail would have a far better impact than in the wholesale sector.

Shergill warned that the SAD should not play opportunistic politics against farmers' interests for their own business gains and just to keep their BJP bosses in Delhi happy, as it would ultimately damage the state's interests.

"The SAD has been opposing FDI on the pretext that it will harm retailers. However, it has lost sight of the fact that wholesalers like Metro are rather retailers in the disguise of wholesalers," he added.
