After the accident that killed 13 children in a school-van collision with a truck near Nakodar on March 4, the Punjab government took a decision to fit all the school buses with speed governors to run at a maximum of 40 km an hour.

Punjab State Road Safety Council led by transport minister Ajit Singh Kohar told all school-bus drivers that they must have heavy-vehicle licence and an experience of at least five years. The operators required to paint the buses yellow and put the contact details of the school in bold letters on the body.

Any driver who had received two traffic tickets was to lose job. Drivers were required to have regular medical examination and keep a proper first-aid kit on board.
